Hospitals are reporting increasing bed pressures. In fact, 56 hospitals (half of all hospitals that provide surgeries in Ontario) reported that they cancelled a total of 4,023 surgeries in January.
With 97.9% bed occupancy and (on average) another 799 patients in Emergency Rooms waiting for an acute care bed, cancelled surgeries are hardly surprising.
In March 2011, there was a 3% increase in the number of patients waiting in an Emergency Room for an inpatient bed compared with February (i.e. 26 more patients). That was a 6.5% increase (49 patients) compared with March 2010.
